Memorial Day

Memorial Day weekend, summer begins,
Cookouts, camp outs and cemetery visits
to honor the dead.
A weekend with flowers covering graves
that are barren the rest of the year.
Parades to march in,
or watch along the street curb,
with young ones hoping for candy thrown their way.
Graveside sermons to be preached
about service,
and sacrifice,
and mortality,
All in honor of Memorial Day.
Children out of school
celebrate instead
a season of play
all things have a season,
yet death, present always,
a reality to every season,
the dead have only a day
or maybe a weekend
The last weekend in May,
Memorial Day.
